Touched by a Rhinoceros in Hluhluwe Game Reserve

As a tour operator we get to see some spectacular sightings, Black Rhino, Wild Dogs and pups, Lions mating and the list goes on.

However this year a first I must admit we where invited to witness the Capture of 5 White Rhinos in the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve, this never before experience for either of us kept us awake as the days slowly crept forward. Sleepless nights and long days however no sooner had we started discussing what it was that we where to see and the day was present.

A early departure to the game reserve, breakfast at Centenery Centre ( Game Capture displays and lots of info ) and of course a game drive to see what could be spotted without clients. Finally the time had come to meet the Game Capture crew of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, as the sun was setting and almost a ritual in South Africa the wood started to burn and techniques and stories of game capture where explained, this of course did not help as we where to leave early the next day, yet another night of anticipation and little sleep.

With the sound of trucks, helicopter starting up and a warm cup of coffee in hand finally the day had arrived. Formalities over introductions past we now where following the crew of the game capture team. We all met at a predesignated area, additional checks where done, crew briefed again with regards to safety.

Then the thundering of the helicopter this was it, radios bellowing and GPS coordinates received we where on the move again tis time to witness what we had waited for so long. As we arrived at scene not one but two White Rhino's had been darted, with the precision of a Swiss watch the crew jumped into action the vets monitored the vitals of the Rhino's and the crew prepared the animals to be transferred into their boxes for transport. One can not explain the professionalism in which these animals are handled with utter care and such dedication. Once the vets administered an antidote it was finally our chance to Touch this magnificent creature, with hearts pounding and palms moist finally touch. The texture of the skin is soft much softer than one can possibly imagine, and then one experiences the most exquisite experience of all a White Rhino breathing. The amount of air breathed in is quite tremendous and frightening at the same time.

With photos and video footage as trophies and triumphant smiles we had just touched a Rhino. From here the animal once the antidote takes effect is ushered into the transport box. This incredible sighting and experience is over however the experience most definitely will last a lifetime.
