South Africa - The Elephant Coast

One of the most beautiful and untouched areas in South Africa is the Elephant Coast in the province of KwaZulu Natal. It is a narrow strip of land that is about 200km long. North of the Elephant Coast one would find the Ubombo Mountains; east of it is the temperate Indian Ocean; and south of it the Umfolozi River.

The Umfolozi River is located just below the St Lucia Estuary which is part of a World Heritage Site. The area is rich with history, containing a number of paleontological sites of scientific significance.

The vegetation of the Elephant Coast area consists of evergreen forests of immense fig trees standing in a flourishing undergrowth of ferns and wild orchids hanging from the trees. Palm savannahs with thousands of wild date and other palms scattered along the white sand of rolling landscape. Innumerable exquisite birds call the swamp forests, with large raffia and knotted masses of greenery, home. Behind these forests is a picturesque landscape of mountainous sand dunes.

There are a minimal number of places in Africa that boast the unbelievable diversity of the fresh water ecosystems found here. The elephant coast is host to major rivers; broad flood plains; large coastal lagoons; deep clear coastal lakes; widespread papyrus swamps; and semi-permanent pans.

Inhabitants of this area include hippopotamuses, crocodiles and small game, which are still found in the wild, as well as an extraordinary number of bird species. This is one of the few destinations where a visitor can see the Big Five in a game reserve, and within a short drive be able to view dolphins and whales.

The Elephant Coast is a perfect destination for all ages, offering something to everyone. There are numerous game reserves; beautiful beaches; the opportunity to go deep-sea fishing and diving on a number of reefs; mountain trails; cultural activities; as well as a number of historical sites. There are a variety of excellent accommodations available to accommodate every pocket. A holiday here will be enjoyed by everyone; whether you are an adventure lover, or you just wish to escape to the bush and connect with nature.
